Pumped-hydro energy storage facilities are the most well established and advantageous option for large-scale energy storage technology. They are pivotal in stabilizing the power grid and facilitating the transition from a reliance on fossil fuels to a sustainable, renewables-driven economy. However, the requirement for mountainous terrain hinders the ubiquitous use of pumped hydro facilities.

Energiasalv is overcoming this hurdle and making the efficiencies of pumped-hydro energy storage accessible across geographies through its innovative geotechnical pumped hydro storage solution—Zero Terrain. Its revolutionary approach is tailored for regions lacking suitable natural topography.

Zero Terrain involves placing lower reservoirs within the Earth’s crust and using larger surface water bodies like rivers or lakes as upper reservoirs for energy storage. This process capitalizes on abundant renewable energy by charging during surplus periods—achieved by pumping water to the higher pool— and generating electricity when renewable power is scarce—by allowing the water to flow back into turbines.

“The modularity of Zero Terrain’s design enhances flexibility, so its underground reservoirs can be tailored for diverse energy storage needs, be it for scaling volumes in megawatt increments or customizing configurations for specific applications,” says Peep Siitam, managing partner of Enegiasalv.

It eliminates the need for reservoirs to be built at high altitudes and allows storage plants to be built near electricity generation or consumption centers. This saves money and resources that would otherwise be used for developing power lines across vast regions. Additionally, Energiasalv’s pumpedhydro storage solution remains economically viable, costing two to three times less than lithium batteries. This distinction adds to the appeal of Zero Terrain as it aligns with the growing emphasis on resource conservation.

Zero Terrain’s comprehensive approach encompasses endto- end development, including design, engineering, financing, and leasing of power plants. The driving force is the emphasis on delivering functional facilities that guide clients’ present and future undertakings.

Energiasalv’s solution stands out for its smaller environmental footprint than conventional methods, a competency relevant in the current landscape where sustainability is paramount.

Another key reason behind Energiasalv’s transformative innovations is Siitam, a highly accomplished civil engineer and visionary leader in the energy sector. His dedication to sustainable energy solutions led him to establish several nonprofit organizations in the energy sector, including Cleantech Estonia and Estonian Energy Cooperatives. These organizations have been pivotal in promoting clean and renewable energy practices in Estonia.

One of the ongoing demo projects is in Paldiski, Estonia. It includes establishing an expansive underground energy storage facility with a substantial capacity of 500 MW. Through this undertaking, Peep and his team are harnessing the potential of Paldiski Bay to revolutionize energy storage and make significant strides toward a more sustainable and affordable future.

With the project in Estonia underway, Energiasalv is looking to hire more professionals to expand its workforce and build a team capable of efficiently addressing the different geology, engineering, financing, and grid challenges across multiple countries in APAC and Europe.

Energiasalv is set to spark the launch of other global endeavors powered by Zero Terrain.
