The European Union Council highlights the vital need for long-duration energy storage technology to enable the decarbonization of the power industry
FREMONT CA: Industry stakeholder groups from all around Europe have joined forces to encourage the European Union to include long-duration energy storage in its European Green Deal. The Environmental Coalition on Standards, the European Association for Storage of Energy (EASE), energy storage and renewables industry associations, including Spanish storage industry groups AEPIBAL and ASEALEN, Flow Batteries Europe, and the European Copper Institute, have all signed a joint letter.
The letter, which is addressed to Commissioners and the French Presidency of the European Union Council and European Parliament committee members working on the Green Deal package, emphasizes the critical need for long-duration energy storage technologies to enable electricity sector decarbonization.

The signees stated that the US has made long-duration storage adoption and market involvement easier, and consider that Europe cannot stay behind. The groups emphasized the significance of energy storage in providing flexibility and grid stability, providing the huge integration of renewable energy into Europe's electricity networks. The letter claimed that so much more is required than storage systems with a storage period of up to four hours, commonly used for additional services or to replace peaker plants. Long-duration energy storage can also save money on transmission infrastructure, bringing more stable and affordable electricity prices across Europe.
For the European end-users, the electricity prices will be consistent and affordable. The letter said that large investments in energy infrastructure are required for the energy transition, with money flowing away from fossil fuels and toward clean energy and other climate solutions.Interestingly, large end-users of energy with decarbonization aspirations are more enthusiastic about the technologies, in addition to a push for long-duration energy storage at the government level in the US and the UK as well.
