Renewable energy sources are increasing in many European countries as part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change.
FREMONT, CA: In the last ten years, Europe has been transitioning to renewable sources of energy to produce electricity. Wind and solar energy have been the primary reasons behind this shift, and in 2021, they contributed around 19 per cent to the EU's electricity generation. Although nuclear energy has declined in the past few decades, it still remains the most significant source of electricity generation in Europe.

With considerable progress in the last ten years, Europe has steadily moved towards renewable sources of energy for their electricity generation. In 2021, fossil fuels like oil, natural gas, and coal made up 49 per cent of the total EU’ electricity generation, while renewable energy sources made up 18 per cent. A decade later, renewable energy sources are approaching close to equalling fossil fuels, with renewables making up 32 per cent of the EU’s electricity generation compared to fossil fuels 36 per cent in 2021.
The development of wind and solar generation have been the predominant operators in the shift towards renewables, preceding from generating 8 per cent of the EU’s electricity in 2011 all the way to 19 per cent in 2021. Although this might appear insignificant, the EU’s share of wind and solar electricity generation is bound for first alongside Oceania when compared to other regions around the world. Although Hydropower appears with a limited source compared to other sources, it is the most customary source of electricity generation in Europe, playing an important role in renewable energy.
The Primary Electricity Sources of Europe’s Major Nations
The major source of electricity in the biggest countries of Europe is fossil fuels, with Germany being heavily dependent on coal power, accounting for 31 per cent of the country's electricity generation between 2017 to 2021. However, despite this reliance on carbon-intensive energy sources, the combined contribution of wind and solar energy accounted for a higher percentage of Germany's electricity generation, with wind contributing 23 per cent and solar contributing 10 per cent.
France is the biggest economy in Europe that mainly depends on nuclear power, which contributes over 50 per cent of its electricity production. On the other hand, Italy, the UK, and the Netherlands primarily rely on natural gas for electricity generation between 2017 to 2012. Among these three countries, Italy is the most dependent on natural gas, with 42 per cent of its electricity generated by it, while the Netherlands and the UK generate 40 per cent and 38 per cent of their electricity from natural gas, respectively.
Spain stands out from other major European nations as it has successfully transitioned towards using renewable energy sources. Although natural gas accounted for 29 per cent of the country's electricity generation from 2017-2021, its contribution dropped to 14 per cent in 2022 as wind power took over as the primary source, accounting for 32 per cent of electricity generation.
Europe's electricity comes from a variety of sources, including fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil), nuclear energy, renewable energy sources (such as hydropower, wind, and solar), and imports from neighbouring countries. The exact mix of sources varies from country to country and is influenced by factors such as natural resources, energy policies, and economic considerations. In recent years, there has been a trend towards increasing the share of renewable energy sources in the electricity mix in many European countries, as part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change.
