Energy from the sun: For thousands of years, humans have harnessed solar energy to grow crops, stay warm, and dry food. In today's world, the sun's rays are used to heat homes and businesses, warm water, and to power electronics.
Photovoltaic (PV) cells directly convert sunlight into electricity using silicon or other materials. The distributed solar system generates electricity for homes and businesses locally, either through rooftop panels or community-based projects. Thousands of homes can be powered by solar farms, using mirrors to concentrate sunlight across acres of solar cells. Water bodies that are not ecologically sensitive can be used for floating solar farms or "floatovoltaics."
Energy from the wind: Around the world, turbines with diameters nearly as large as skyscrapers stand at attention. Turbine blades are turned by wind energy, which feeds an electric generator. In the U.S., wind energy accounts for 9.2 percent of electricity generation.

Power generated by hydroelectricity: Hydropower is the largest renewable energy source for electricity in the United States. By spinning a generator's turbine blades, hydropower generates electricity from water - typically fast-moving water in a river or rapidly descending water from a high point.
Large hydroelectric plants, or mega-dams, are often considered nonrenewable energy sources both nationally and internationally. Natural flows are diverted and reduced by mega-dams, restricting access for animal and human populations. As small hydroelectric plants divert only a fraction of the flow, they don't tend to cause as much environmental damage as large hydroelectric plants.
Energy from biomass: Biomass refers to organic material derived from plants and animals, including crops, waste wood, and trees. A steam turbine can generate electricity when biomass is burned, releasing chemical energy as heat.
Recent studies indicate that many forms of biomass, especially those from forests, produce higher carbon emissions than fossil fuels. Biodiversity is also negatively affected. The right circumstances could make biomass energy a low-carbon option. Low-carbon energy can be produced from sawdust and chips from sawmills that would otherwise quickly decompose and release carbon.
The ocean: The ocean will always be ruled by the moon's gravity, making it an attractive option to harness its power through tidal and wave energy.
